Leigh Waterman, RA, NCARB, AIA

Leigh Waterman is a creative and technologically-savvy architectural design professional with over 15+ years of real world experience in project and information technology management and documentation. His vision of advancing BIM by bringing affordable real-world expert knowledge to the entire community is directly embodied in the founding philosophy of BIM Coalition.


Leigh Waterman previously held the position of Worldwide Director of BIM and Technology for Cannon Design's 17 worldwide offices where he was directly responsible for the successful implementation of BIM in a multi-office and multidiscipline environment creating a fluid workflow for the Architectural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Structural, Cost Estimating, and Spec Writing professionals using varying BIM technologies with Autodesk Revit as the core workhorse. He has also held the position of Digital Design Manager for the San Francisco office Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) where he directly developed and oversaw BIM strategies at the local as well as Los Angeles and Asian offices. Both firms received international recognition as well as BIM awards during his tenure.


Prior to devoting his career to advancing BIM, and long before BIM was a topic of conversation for the general AEC community, Leigh Waterman had successfully implemented software such as AutoCAD ADT and later Autodesk Revit for several other small architectural and multidiscipline firms. As a Job Captain or Project Architect, he has successfully completed over 250 projects using Autodesk Revit and has been directly responsible for the implementation and support of BIM technologies on hundreds of other projects of varying sizes.


Leigh Waterman is a Registered Architect in New York State, holds a National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB) certificate, and is also an active member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) where he has been involved with several Building Information Modeling (BIM) and Integrated Project Development (IPD) committees throughout his career. He graduated Summa Cum Laude for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with both a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Science in Building Sciences. He is considered one of the world's leading experts on the implementation and real-life practice of BIM using Autodesk Revit and other related BIM technologies and has spoken on the subject at several high profile public and private events.
